Sarah Hammer Defends her World Championship Title; Betters her American Record

MAJORCA, Spain (April 2, 2007) - Sarah earned her second world title this past weekend at the World Track Cycling Championships in Majorca, Spain. Sarah became the first American rider in more than 20 years to successfully defend a title since Rebecca Twigg accomplished the feat during the 1984-1985 season. Sarah beat Rebecca Romero of Great Britain in the gold medal final of the three-kilometer pursuit, and bettered the American record she set earlier in the day.

Sarah's time of three minutes, 30.213 seconds shaved more than a second from the record time she recorded only a few hours earlier during the qualifying round. This is the third time she has improved the American record in five months. In October 2006, at the US National Championships, she shattered the 11-year-old record of three minutes, 36.08 seconds held by Rebecca Twigg, by almost four seconds. Since then, Sarah has reset the time standard three times: at the Los Angeles World Cup in January and twice again over this past weekend.

BIG congrats to Sarah and the team!!
